Growing turmeric allows you to harvest fresh rhizomes, for your daily uses. This post gives you guides and tips for growing turmeric in your garden.
Tips for growing Turmeric
Planting Turmeric
- Choosing the right rhizomes: First, selecting the rhizomes for growing is important. Healthy roots can develop good-quality turmeric. So, you need to select plump, healthy rhizomes with multiple growth buds.
- Preparing the soil: Turmeric grows in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Then, you need to amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve its texture and nutrient content.
- Planting: In terms of period, plant the turmeric in spring or early summer. It’s ideal once the soil has warmed. You should plant them about 2 – 3 inches (5 – 7 cm) deep and 12 – 18 inches (30 – 45 cm) apart.
- Climate: Turmeric prefers warm, humid climates. If you live in a cooler region, consider growing it in containers and moving them indoors during colder months.
Nurturing Turmeric plant
- Watering: It’s better to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. You should water deeply and less frequently to encourage deeper root growth.
- Fertilizing: You should apply a balanced organic fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
- Mulching: Weeds are the enemy of plants. So, you need to apply a layer of organic mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Sunlight: Turmeric prefers full sun to partial shade. So you should choose a suitable place where turmeric can get enough light.
- Pest and disease control: Check turmeric plants for pests like aphids and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap.
Harvesting Turmeric
Turmeric rhizomes are typically harvested in late autumn or early winter, after about 8-10 months of growth. Here are steps on how to harvest turmeric.
- Digging: Firstly, gently dig up the entire plant roots.
- Cleaning: Then, remove the soil and dirt from the rhizomes with water.
- Curing: Cut the rhizomes into smaller pieces and spread them out on a drying rack or paper towels in a warm, dry place.
- Storing: Once dry, store the turmeric rhizomes in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
By following these guidelines, you can successfully grow turmeric in your garden and enjoy the benefits of this golden spice.
