Dragon Fruit Exports: Regained Its Ranking, Just Behind Durian
[Update September 11th, 2024] According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VFVA), in the first 6 months of 2024, dragon fruit exports ranked second with 292 million USD, just behind durian exports.
Vietnamese Dragon Fruit Exports has regained 2nd ranking
On July 29, the General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association – said that in previous years, dragon fruit brought the largest export value to the fruit and vegetable industry.
2018 was the highest record, dragon fruit brought to Vietnam nearly 1.3 billion USD. But then gradually decreased and lost the export milestone of 1 billion USD in 2022. At the time when Japan had a protocol for the official import of Vietnamese dragon fruit, exporting this fruit recovered. However, when durian exports broke out, dragon fruit was behind.
In the world, people consider dragon fruit as a “super fruit” because of the benefits it brings to human health. Dragon fruit is popular in the Chinese market. 90% of China’s imported dragon fruit is from Vietnam. In the first 6 months of 2024, the Chinese market reduced its import value by 26%. But it was still the largest dragon fruit import market with a value of 203 million USD, accounting for 68% of the market share.
Vietnamese dragon fruit is grown in the tropics, with a lot of sunshine and suitable soil. So it is very sweet and cool, dragon fruit from other countries is not as good; especially red-fleshed dragon fruit. Therefore, the position of Vietnamese dragon fruit for export has many advantages in maintaining the second rank, just after durian.
Despite a recovery sign of dragon fruit exports, durian continues to be the “champion”. According to the VFVA, in the first 6 months, its export value reached over 1.3 billion USD. It is up 44.4% over the same period last year. Dragon fruit ranked second with 292 million USD, down 14.3% over the same period last year.
