Vietnamese Dragon Fruit entered new markets
Vietnam’s dragon fruit exports hit USD 230 million in the first four months of 2024. According to data from the General Department of Customs. In comparison to the same period in 2023, it decreased by 7.5%. In addition, this resulted in a 40% drop in the amount of dragon fruit in the fruit export compared to the previous year.
The primary export market, China, continued to decline in the first four months of this year. It reached just 162 million USD, which is the reason for the decrease in Vietnamese dragon fruit shipments. When compared to the same time last year, it decreased by 19.3%. Furthermore, the two markets of Hong Kong and Japan decreased their imports of Vietnamese dragon fruit. It was an estimated decline of 0.6 to 7.5%.
While the East Asian market reduced imports of dragon fruit from Vietnam. Vietnamese dragon fruit exports to the US, UK, Germany, France, Australia, and India unexpectedly increased sharply. Among them exports to Germany and the UK saw the biggest increases, rising by 2.3 to 2.7 times over the same time the previous year. It hit over 1 million USD in the UK market and 786,000 USD in Germany. India saw a 33% increase in dragon fruit exports with 16.5 million USD. While the US saw a 102% increase with 13 million USD.
Although Vietnam exports very little dragon fruit to these nations, this is a plus. Vietnamese items are becoming more and more popular among customers in these nations. Numerous predictions indicate that the export turnover will rise much more in the second half of the year. The dragon fruit crop is currently available on the market this year. It is moderately weighed and more uniform in size than in prior years. Therefore, it meets the needs of Western nations.
The global output of dragon fruit fell this year due to El Nino, according to the General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association. This year’s crop disasters in South American and Mexican nations provided a window of opportunity for Vietnamese goods to enter the European and North American markets.
In many places, the cost of white-fleshed dragon fruit is rising by USD 0.08 to USD 0.12 per kg due to the stability of the export market. It is between USD 0.56 and USD 0.64 per kg. Red-fleshed dragon fruit, on the other hand, varies in price per kilogram from USD 1.2 and 1.72 (based on variety).
