Packing Seedless Limes for Export
Seedless limes, a tropical fruit, have gained popularity recently. It has a long and delicate journey from the field to the global market. Here’s a glimpse into the process of packing seedless limes fruits for export.
1. Harvesting Seedless Limes
Producers typically harvest seedless limes when they reach full size and show a bright green color. They should pick carefully to avoid damaging the fruit. Therefore, they harvest by hand to ensure selective picking of the best quality limes. They also use scissors, allowing to select and pick the desired size.
2. Processing and packing Seedless Limes
After harvest, producers move to the washing and sorting steps. First, they thoroughly clean the seedless limes. They wash the seedless limes in a specialized cleaning solution to remove dirt and debris.
After that, they sort limes by size and quality by using advanced sorting machines. The seedless limes will go through a plate with different sizes to be sorted. There are 3 popular sizes of seedless limes: 8 – 14 fruits/ kg; 8 – 18 fruits/kg and 8 – 22 fruits/kg. The more number of limes per kg, the smaller the seedless limes. Producers will discard any damaged, soft, or deformed limes. So. they only select the top-grade limes for export.
Then, it comes to the packing process of seedless limes. The packaging material is often carton boxes.
Carton boxes: Use new, sturdy corrugated cardboard boxes specifically designed for fruit export. These boxes should be sized appropriately for either 4kg or 10kg net weight when filled.
Inner liners: A food-grade polyethylene (PE) liner placed inside the box helps maintain freshness and prevent moisture build-up.
Normally producers pack them into a carton box with a weight of 4kg or 10kg. This is the optimal weight for packing, storing and transporting. However, depending on customer needs, they also offer OEM service.
After packing the seedless lime, producers stack the boxes on a pallet with gaps between the boxes for better air ventilation. They store batches of seedless limes in cold storage that keeps the temperature of 2°C and 5°C and the humidity level of 85-95% constant to slow down the ripe rate and spoilage.
3. Transportation for export
During transportation, producers use freezer containers for extended periods to ensure the product’s freshness. They need to maintain a consistent temperature of 2°C to 5°C (38°F to 41°F) and humidity levels between 85% and 95%. It is crucial for maintaining product freshness for exporters.
