Dragon Fruit Export: Global Trends and Market Demand

10 June 2024

Dragon fruit (or pitaya) stands out as a vibrant and exotic agricultural export from Vietnam. With its striking appearance—bright pink or yellow skin with green scales—it has captured the attention of global consumers. Notably, Vietnam has emerged as the world’s largest exporter of dragon fruit due to its high quality and abundant source. Experts predict dragon fruit will remain the main product for export in the future. Now, let’s find out about the export trend and market demand for this fruit!

1. Recent trend of Dragon Fruits export

Dragon fruit has been a major player in Vietnam’s agricultural exports. While Vietnam’s overall fruit exports are experiencing a surge in early 2024, dragon fruit exports have a more complex story.

Historical peak in 2019

Around 2019, pitaya became a sought-after fruit worldwide due to its sweet, juicy flesh and unique appearance. This also made dragon fruit export from Vietnam reach its peak. In 2019, the export value of dragon fruit reached $1.27 billion, the highest ever. However, after reaching a peak, exports particularly to China (where Vietnam exported 80% of this fruit), have seen a decline due to many reasons.

Exporting Dragon Fruit

Decline in exports to China

China, which had been the primary market for Vietnamese dragon fruit, experienced a decline in imports. In 2021 and 2022, the export value dropped significantly, falling nearly 39% compared to the previous year and over 49% from the peak in 2019. This decline was attributed to various factors, including changes in consumer preferences and economic dynamics.

Impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated matters. Supermarkets, markets, restaurants closures during the pandemic led to a sudden drop in dragon fruit demand. Intermediaries hesitated due to market uncertainties, resulting in a supply-demand gap. Additionally, China applying the Zero COVID policy which limited the exchange of goods also contributed to the decline in the export of dragon fruit.

Recent recovery

Luckily, early 2024 brought positive news. Overall fruit exports from Vietnam rebounded, showing a recovery. The dragon fruit market regained momentum due to health-conscious consumers seeking fresh, exotic produce. Vietnam has made contracts with many new markets, including the hard ones like the USA, Europe, Japan… This is a promising opportunity for fruit export. The recent growth in Vietnam’s overall fruit exports shows a positive trend in the industry.

2. New markets, more demand for Dragon Fruits

Looking beyond traditional markets, there’s a push to diversify export destinations for Vietnamese dragon fruit.

Other new markets: Vietnam is actively diversifying its export markets beyond China. While China remains crucial, exploring other regions—such as India and Japan—offers growth opportunities. These markets appreciate the dragon fruit’s visual appeal, taste, and health benefits. Moreover, Europe, although relatively new to dragon fruit, showed promise, attracting more consumers. Demand remains robust in the United States, despite stringent pesticide residue regulations.

Product diversification: In addition to fresh dragon fruit, there’s growing interest in processed forms. Dragon fruit-based products like juices, jams, and dried snacks are gaining popularity. Product diversification enhances resilience and opens doors to new markets.

Dragon Fruit Export

So, Vietnamese dragon fruit exports face both challenges and opportunities. By diversifying markets and products, Vietnamese dragon fruit producers can ensure the long-term success of this unique agricultural export.

Conclusion: Vietnamese dragon fruit continues to captivate the world. Despite challenges, opportunities abound. As exporters adapt, they can leverage the fruit’s allure, explore new markets, and contribute to global culinary delight.
