2. Coffee Beans cultivation in Vietnam
The cultivation of coffee plants is the first step in the production of coffee. Arabica (Coffea arabica) and Robusta (Coffea canephora) are the two primary species. Robusta beans are more resilient and can grow at lower elevations, whereas Arabica beans are grown at higher elevations and are prized for their superior flavor.
Arabica thrives at elevations between 600 and 2,000 meters and needs a cool subtropical climate. It requires certain shade conditions and a lot of moisture. Harvesting Coffee Beans
In a year, the farmers can harvest coffee beans twice. The main coffee crop of Arabica coffee usually starts around November to April of the following year. This time frame can extend from November to June for Robusta. The best coffee cherries are frequently produced by this crop. with consistent ripeness and a distinct flavor. But there’s an extra crop of coffee. For both Arabica and Robusta coffees, it typically begins immediately following the main crop and lasts from May to September. Compared to the main crop, coffee berries that are harvested as an extra crop are frequently of lower quality. and are frequently utilized for different things, like instant coffee or goods of a lower required quality.
Harvesting methods vary depending on the type of bean. Robusta beans are known for their high yield, so farmers often hand-pick them to ensure they only collect ripe cherries. 4. The Coffee Bean size classification process
Here are the steps in the classification process of coffee beans.
The workers pour coffee beans through vibrating screens with different hole sizes. These screens with holes of different diameters according to specific standards (from 8 to 20/64 inches). If you have a handful of green coffee, spread it on an 18/64-inch screen. The beans that are on the screen will be classified as screen 18. The beans that fall through the screen and stay on the 16/64 screen will be classified as screen 16.
Like that, we will have relatively groups of coffee beans of the same size. However, this classification is also difficult to be 100% absolute, SCA allows a 5% error with screen measurements.
The numbers 20, 18, 16… have the meaning the ratio of beans on 64 parts of 1 inch. For example, sieve 18 corresponds to 18/64 inch or 7.1mm, and sieve 16 is 16/64 inch or 6.3mm.

Common Coffee Bean sizes
Vibrating screens usually measure coffee bean sizes. Sifters come in many different sizes, usually numbered from 8 to 20. In which 20 is the largest and 8 is the smallest.
